Sewing Stream: A Skirt and A Shirt (or Two)

I made a skirt for Halcyone at the beginning of the summer from the Oliver + S Hopscotch pattern. It is still a little on the big side. I know she is still tiny for her age, but I am beginning to think that most of the Oliver + S patterns run a little large. I didn't have the yardage suggested for this skirt, so I broke the pattern up a bit and used different fat quarters for the pockets, skirt body, and band. As usual (for me) I substituted size 16 snaps for the buttons down the front. Halcyone is partial to this one because it has giraffes!

I had some other smaller pieces of fabric that I wanted to use for summer clothes. I had hoped to figure out a dress pattern for them, but ended up falling in love with the Oliver + S 2+2 Blouse pattern. I made a trial shirt to get the hang of the pattern, then followed it up with a 4th of July top. Again, I used size 16 snaps from The Snap Source for the back of this top instead of spending extra time on button holes. This pattern runs a little truer to size.

Sewing Stream: Two More Dresses

Because it costs so little to make dresses for Halcyone ($6-12) at her current size, and because I LOVE to sew for her, I made quite a few dresses this summer. My favorite patterns are still Oliver + S.

I used the Ice Cream Dress pattern for this one. It is probably my favorite dress from the summer. I will certainly be making more of them. I'd love to figure out how to make it long-sleeved for the fall. I used some Lucy's Crab Shack fabric and embellished the dress with some thick embroidery thread top-stitching. The part on the yolk I actually substituted for just sewing with the machine.

The other dress was from the Croquet Dress pattern. It was a little trickier to sew. It is a bit big in the neck still for my petite little girl, and the elastic in the waist came out too tight to look the way I was hoping. I'm going to open the elastic casing up and add a few more inches. I'm guessing this dress will fit better on a bigger girl. I added a little folded piece of the striped skirt fabric in at the yolk to help tie the whole thing together.
